Photos from the Chess Classic in Mainz by Harald Fietz
Harald Fietz took some nice photos at the Chess Classic 2007 in Mainz and kindly allowed us to publish them on our website.
First, some pictures of the programmers:

Now some pictures of the Chess960 World Computer Chess Championship:
1. round, Spike vs. Rybka, Spike won the game. Between Vas and me you can see Hans-Walter Schmitt, the organizer of the Chess Classic.
Hans-Walter Schmitt liked white's f3, which blocks black's knight, but I don't like it since it makes the development of the two knights and the white squared bishop more difficult.
A computer chess fan in a red t-shirt is talking to the arbiter.
Yes, the guy in the red t-shirt is Aronian :)
In the third round we had some problems with the GUI "Jose".
What happened? Rybka played strange moves like a4-a5 and then...
Shredder castled and Vas wasn't able to enter this move because the GUI started the game without castling rights. After this game Rybka used the Shredder GUI.
The game had to be restarted, but then everything was fine.
Kamsky is commenting the game. Rybka's score was about -0.25 but Kamsky said that white is better- the game ended in a draw :)
After the problems with the GUI in the 3. round, there was a discussion about what should be done if such an error happens again. The result was that it would be like an operator error, so you won't lose the game.
Rybka vs. Spike on the second day. Can you find a player with an ELO higher than 2700 in the background?
The final (Rybka vs. Shredder).
Aronian commented the game, which was quite interesting.
No, Vas didn't push my arm, it's just an illusion :) . The water was quite expensive (2.90 Euro!) in the tournament hall, but I got it for free at the computer tournament.
By the way, behind Stefan Mayer-Kahlen you can see Johannes Zwanzger, the author of the engine Jonny, on the right you can see Ralf Schaefer, the other programmer of Spike.
Finally Rybka won against Shredder with 2,5 - 0,5. On the photo you can see Vas in a blue VisBox t-shirt waiting for the price.
Just look in the faces - who just got the trophy? :)
And the final question: Who's Toast (with a capital "T"!)? :)
After the first day I played some blitz games against Vas, which was quite funny. Vas showed some weaknesses by changing his opening system with black (when we played in the internet we always played the same openings) :).
The clock we used was the clock from the computer tournament, when we tried to get a clock we just heard "no clocks in the torunament hall" by an arbiter, but there's nearly always a solution for a problem :)
